Environmental preservation fees considered
Officials argue tourists should pay to keep Jeju beautiful

Local officials are working on new plans to preserve the local environment.

The provincial government and provincial council will form working groups of experts in various fields within the month. They will discuss charging visitors fees, and then using that revenue to help keep the environment clean.

All arriving tourists would have to pay an environmental preservation fee. There would also be admission fees to Jeju’s World Natural Heritage sites, such as Hallasan National Park. Finally, visitors would have to make reservations to enjoy Seongsan Sunrise Peak and other internationally-protected areas.

This proposal comes amid a surge in low-cost group tours that have led to environmental degradation and a rise in preservation costs by the province.

입도객에 대한 환경부담금과 한라산국립공원에 대한
입장료를 징수하는 방안이 구체적으로 논의됩니다.

제주특별자치도와 제주도의회는 이달중에
각 분야의 전문가로 워킹그룹을 구성하고
세계유산 가치를 제대로 이해하고 즐길 수 있도록
새로운 관광시스템 도입을 위한 공론화작업을 진행합니다.

특히 입도객에 대한 환경부담금제를 도입하고
한라산국립공원 등 세계자연유산 지역에 대한 입장료 현실화 방안,
성산일출봉과 같은 국제보호지역에 대한
사전 예약제 도입을 주요 논제로 정해 운영합니다.

제주도와 의회는 저가 단체관광과 과밀한 관광객 탐방 등으로 인한
환경오염과 자연파괴, 환경보전비용의 증가로
이같은 방안을 추진하게 됐다고 밝히고 있습니다.
