Heat wave endanger aquafarms
Fish immunity levels drop

The continuing heat wave across the island begins to affect aquafarms. Many are fearing the possibility of mass die-offs of fish.

The province is urging all aquafarms to take precautionary measures,including regulating the temperature of their tanks.

Officials proposed adding relatively cooler underground or fresh water to the aquafarm tanks to reduce the temperature to below 27 degrees Celsius. Fish immunity levels are known to drop significantly above that threshold, which could lead to a mass die-off.

The province is also urging aquafarmers to clean out their tanks at least once every two days, as seaweed and kelp can start to decay in overly-warm waters. This would endanger abalone and sea cucumbers which feed off the seaplants.

올 여름 계속된 폭염으로 수온이 상승하면서
양식어류에 피해가 우려되고 있습니다.

제주특별자치도는 해수온도가 27도를 넘으면 양식 어류의
면역력이 떨어져 감염병에 의해 대량폐사로 이어질 수 있는 만큼
사전에 미리 대비할 것을 당부하고 있습니다.

특히 수온 관리를 위해 지하해수 또는 담수를 혼합해 적정온도를 유지할 것을 강조하고 있습니다.

또 미역이나 다시마 등 해조류가 높은 수온에 부패될 경우
전복이나 홍해삼이 폐사할 수 있기 때문에 하루나 이틀에 한번씩
사육수조를 깨끗히 관리해 줄 것을 당부하고 있습니다.
