Mosquito numbers rise in August
Long-sleeved clothing advised while outdoors

As we enter the second week of August, the number of mosquitoes has started to rise and experts are advising residents to take precautions.

The Jeju Research Institute of Public Health and Environment has analyzed data on the mosquito population over the past two years. It found that 40 percent of all sightings appeared consistent in the month of August.

Particularly, 62 percent of the mosquito species that carries the Japanese encephalitis virus was found in August.

The institute is advising residents to wear long-sleeves when outdoors. Meanwhile fumigation programs around populated areas will continue until October.

8월 모기 개체수 급증…예방 주의

이달부터 제주지역 모기 개체수가 급증할 조짐을 보이면서
예방에 주의가 필요합니다.

제주도보건환경연구원에 따르면 지난 2년 간 여름철 모기 개체수를 분석한 결과 전체 개체수의 40%가 8월에 집중된 것으로 나타났습니다.

특히 일본 뇌염 매개모기인 작은빨간집모기 개체수의 62%가
8월에 채집된 것으로 조사됐습니다.

보건환경연구원은 야외활동시 긴 옷을 입는 등의 예방수칙을
지켜줄 것을 당부하는 한편
10월까지 모기 서식지를 집중 방역할 계획입니다.
