Volcanic cones ‘should be provincial parks’
Integrated management suggested for Jeju’s oreum

According to a new report, Jeju’s iconic volcanic cones -- or oreum (오름) -- should be designated provincial parks in order to ensure that they are efficiently managed.

This is the conclusion of Jeju Development Institute researcher Kim Tae-yoon (김태윤) and Jeju Environmental Education and Research Institute chief Hyeon Won-hak (현원학), who studied the issue.

They found that while the oreum have enough value to be preserved, 11 laws dealing with these sites separately were actually hindering a more efficient, integrated management approach.

The two researchers stated that the most effective way to integrate the management and preservation of the oreum would be to convert them into provincial parks in accordance with the Natural Parks Act.


3. "제주 오름, '도립공원'으로 지정해야"

'제주지역 오름의 도립공원화 방안연구'을 통해 제주 오름의 경우 보전 가치가 탁월하지만 현재 11개의 법률에 의해 제각각 지정 관리되며 혼선을 빚고 있는 만큼 이를 통합적으로 운영해야 한다고 주장했습니다.

이를 위해 여러법률 가운데 자연공원법에 의한
도립공원 지정 관리방안을 가장 효과적인 대안으로 제시했습니다.

그리고 도립공원으로 지정함에 있어 중산간 지역의 생물권보전지역과 오름군락, 상대적으로 보전가치가 높은 오름을 선정해 추진하는게 바람직하다고 제언했습니다.
