Jeju City secures ₩1.3b in national funding for ‘batdam’
Money to be spent on economic development in farming communities
Jeju City has secured 1.3 billion won in national funding to turn the island’s traditional stone walls into a revenue stream for farming villages.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs earmarked the funds as part of its initiative to economically develop the communities.
The province will use the money to develop a brand using Jeju “batdam,” as the walls are known in Korean, and help rural villages lead and benefit from the associated community projects.
In a similar vein, officials have announced that they will also push ahead with a so-called “health resource marketing project” designed to boost agricultural tourism.
