Seawater salinity level, temperature back to average
'Recent wind and waves helped return conditions to normal’

The salinity level and temperature of the seawater off Jeju’s western coast have returned to normal after weeks of low-salinity and higher-than-usual temperatures.

The Jeju Ocean and Fisheries Research Institute recently finished testing the water in 17 locations, from Sagye-ri, Andeok-myeon to Gwideok in Hallim. Temperatures have dropped five degrees Celsius over the past week to between 25 and 27 degrees. Salinity levels have risen five parts per thousand to anywhere from 29 to 32 ppt.

Researchers say it is now safe to say that the low-salinity phenomenon is behind us. They credit the recent high waves and strong winds as having having helped return the salinity and temperatures to normal ranges.

서부연안 수온·염분 정상수치 회복

제주서부연안과 마을어장 주변 바닷물의 수온과 염분이 정상수치를 회복했습니다.

제주도해양수산연구원이 최근 안덕면 사계리에서부터 한림 귀덕까지 17곳을 조사한 결과 수온은 25도에서 27도, 염분농도는 29에서 32퍼밀로 관측됐습니다. 이는 지난 주보다 수온은 최대 5도가 낮아지고 염분은 5퍼밀 이상 높아진 것으로 연안 고수온 저염분 현상이 사라진 것으로 판단하고 있습니다.

연구원은 최근 높은 파도와 강한 해풍으로 바닷물이 섞이면서 정상 수온과 염분 농도를 회복한 것으로 보고 있습니다.
