Scientists to study rock below Hallasan’s crater lake
Part of geological research in nature reserve

Geologists will, for the first time ever, drill through the bottom of Hallasan Mountain’s crater lake, which is named Baengnokdam.

The World Heritage and Hallasan Research Center and the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources are performing the study, which has a pricetag of 380 million won. It began Friday and is running through September 10th.

The crater lake will be drilled in six different spots, each 20 meters deep. Researchers will extract samples in order to estimate the age of each sedimentary layer, when volcanic eruptions took place, and the climate at the time.

The only other drilling ever to be conducted on the mountain was into bedrock at an elevation of 600 to 700 meters above sea level.

사업비 3억 8천만 원을 들여 내일(2일)부터 10일까지
한라산 백록담에 시추장비를 투입해 6개 지점에 20미터 깊이로 시추를 진행할 예정입니다. 제주도는 시추 후 시료 분석을 통해 퇴적층 연대와 화산 분출시기 그리고 당시 기후 등을 연구할 계획입니다.
그동안 한라산 해발 600~700미터에서 암반 시추 사례는 있지만
한라산 정상에서 추진되는 시추는 이번이 처음입니다.
