Research on Korean fir preservation
Ministry of Environment funds effort with \350m


Researchers will look into ways to preserve Korean firs, which are dying out on Hallasan Mountain because of climate change.


The Jeju World Natural Heritage Center has received 350 million won from the Ministry of Environment for the project. That money will be used to take aerial photos in order to get a count on the exact number of Korean firs growing on the mountain, to expand monitoring efforts, and to figure out the precise cause of the die-off.


Researchers will take the new data and combine it with previous study results to gain a comprehensive understanding of how the dispersion and density of the forests have changed over time… and make predictions for the future.


The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources has listed the Korean fir as an endangered species. Global warming is blamed for reducing the species by about half.


한라산 구상나무 보전 연구 추진


기후변화로 고사하고 있는 한라산 구상나무 숲을 보전하기 위한 연구가 본격 추진됩니다.


제주특별자치도 세계유산본부는 환경부로부터 예산 3억 5천만 원을 지원받아 항공사진 촬영을 통해 구상나무 개체수를 확인하고 고사 원인 등 생육 상황을 정밀 관찰하게 됩니다.


또한 지금까지 확보한 구상나무의 분포나 밀도변화의 분석을 바탕으로 앞으로의 변화를 예측한다는 계획입니다.


구상나무는 국제적으로 보호가치가 높지만 지구온난화에 따른 기후변화로
절반 정도가 말라죽은 것으로 추정되고 있습니다.
