Tourism industry grows, but wages drop

Jeju’s tourism industry continues to grow, but the people working in it are making comparatively little.


According to a recent report by the Jeju branch of the Bank of Korea, the local tourism industry grew 7.9 percent last year. That outpaced the overall growth in local industry, which was 6.2 percent. Analysts say the added value generated by the tourism sector jumped 100 billion won from the previous year to 1.6 trillion won.


The operating surplus from tourism businesses rose 0.9 percent between 2010 and 2015. Over the same period, however, the proportion of business budgets paid to workers fell 3.1 percentage points to 43.9 percent.


The average annual salary of people working in the tourism industry was 18.2 million won last year. That’s roughly 1.7 million won lower than their counterparts in manufacturing and construction.


제주 관광 호조세 속 종사자 임금 수준은 하락


제주 관광산업 성장에 비해 종사자의 임금 수준은 상대적으로 낮은 것으로 나타났습니다.


한국은행 제주본부가 발표한 '제주 관광 부가가가치 추계와 관광객의 경제적 파급효과 분석 보고서'에 따르면 지난해 제주지역의 관광시장 성장률은 7.9%로 지역내 총 생산 성장률 6.2%를 웃돌았고 관광부가가치는 1조 6천 억원으로 전년보다 1천억 원 증가했습니다.


지난해 관광업체별 영업잉여는 35.4%로 5년 전보다 0.9% 증가한 반면, 같은 기간 종업원의 보수 비중은 43.9%로 3.1%p 하락했습니다.


관광종사자 평균 임금도 연간 1천 820만 원으로 제조업이나 건설업 등에 비해 많게는 170만 원 낮았습니다.
