More fish being caught, less money being earned
Catch up 1.5%, production earnings down 13%

Fishermen have enjoyed a slightly larger catch recently, but the amount of money earned by the fishing industry as a whole has fallen.

According to the Jeju branch of the Honam Regional Statistics Office, the local catch in December was 7,650 tons. That’s 1.5 percent greater than the year before.

The catch in the general fishing sector grew by 11 percent, led by a 220 percent increase in the amount of yellowtail hauled in and a 187 percent boost in the mackerel catch.

Those gains were tempered by a 15 percent drop in aquaculture production. Overall, the money generated by the sector shrank 13 percent to 74.6 billion won.

제주지역 어업생산량이 소폭 증가한 반면 생산금액은 감소했습니다.

호남지방통계청 제주사무소에 따르면 지난해 12월 제주지역 어업생산량은 7천560여 톤으로 1년 전보다 1.5% 증가했습니다.

특히 방어와 고등어 생산량이 각각 220%, 187% 증가하며 일반해면어업이 전년보다 11% 늘었습니다.

반면 능성어와 복어 등 천해양식업 생산량은 전년보다 15% 줄며 생산금액 역시 13% 감소한 746억 원으로 집계됐습니다.
