Chinese man sentenced to 22 years behind bars
36-year-old found guilty of murdering Chinese woman in Jeju

An appeals court has upheld the 22-year prison sentence of a Chinese man for murdering a Chinese woman here in Jeju in December 2015 and then disposing of her body.

Gwangju High Court Judge (마용주) Ma Yong-ju dismissed the appeal that had been filed by the defendant, a 36-year-old surnamed (쉬) Shi.

The judge accepted the verdict the suspect had received in his first trial, in which he was found guilty of murder in connection with robbery.

In both the initial trial and the appeal, prosecutors had sought a life sentence, arguing that the accused should remain isolated from society until the end of his days.

1심에서 징역 22년을 선고 받은 36살 쉬 모 피고인의 항소를 기각했습니다.

재판부는 공소사실에 비춰 강도살인 혐의에 대해 유죄가 인정되고, 범행경위 등에 비춰 1심 형량은 적절하다며 기각 이유를 설명했습니다.

한편 선고에 앞서 검찰은 피고인을 사회와 격리해야 한다며 1심과 같이 무기징역을 구형했습니다.
