‘No plan to base military units at second airport’
Transport ministry says facility will only be for civilian use

The transport ministry says there are no plans to use the island’s second airport as a base for a search and rescue group as part of the Air Force’s Southern Command.

At a March 23rd town meeting in Seongsan-eup, a ministry representative said the facility was designed from the start to be a civilian-only airport. He added that any military use of the airport had not and will not be discussed.

He said it was necessary for the provincial government to make this position clear to the defense ministry and the air force.

군부대 설치는 사전에 국방부와 논의되지 않았고 앞으로도 군 공항으로 활용할 계획도 없다고 밝혔습니다.

그러면서 제주도가 나서서 국방부와 공군에 군부대 설치에 대한 의사를 명확히 확인할 필요가 있다고 덧붙혔습니다.
