Southeast Asian visitors will no longer need visas from September

Beginning later this year, Southeast Asian tourists will no longer need a visa to visit, but local officials say there’s a lot of work to do to make sure things run smoothly once the change happens.

At a Monday policy meeting, Governor Won Heeryong announced that the visa waiver program would be expanded in September. It now covers only Chinese tourists.

People from Southeast Asia will be allowed to enter and stay in South Korea for five days visa-free regardless of their first destination, as long as their final destination is Jeju.

Analysts say that in order to maximize the benefits and minimize the problems for Jeju, there needs to be direct flight service between Jeju and Southeast Asian countries, which means finding slots for airplanes on those routes at Jeju International, and that the island needs to find people to direct and be responsible for group tours with the tourists.

환승무비자 9월부터 동남아 관광객 확대

동남아 관광객을 대상으로 환승무비자 제도가 오는 9월부터 시행될 전망이지만 보완해야 할 과제가 많습니다.

원희룡 제주특별자치도지사는 오늘 정책회의를 주재하고 사드보복에 따른 후속조치로 중국에 한정돼 있는 환승무비자를 동남아 단체 관광객으로 확대하는 방안을 오는 9월부터 시행할 예정이라고 말했습니다.

환승무비자란 단체관광객에 한해 국내 어디로 들어오든 최종 목적지가 제주일 경우
5일동안 비자없이 입국할 수 있는 제돕니다.

하지만 제주에서 해당국으로 출국해야 하는 만큼 직항편 취항과 함께 제주공항에서의 슬롯 확보, 단체관광객들의 인솔책임자 운영 등 선결과제도 적지 않습니다
