Nearly 600 Jeju elementary students struggle with reading
Many suspected of having dyslexia

Nearly 600 elementary school students in Jeju lack adequate reading skills.

According to the results of reading tests submitted to National Assemblyman and Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Byeong-wook, 587 students on the island struggle with reading or are suspected to have dyslexia.

That’s 1.52 percent of island elementary students.

By region, Gangwon had the highest rate of elementary students with inadequate reading skills - 1.59 percent. (충북) Chungbuk was next on the list. Jeju was third.

제대로 글을 읽지 못하는 도내 초등학생이 580명이 넘는 것으로 조사됐습니다.

국회 교육문화체육관광위원회 소속 더불어민주당 김병욱 의원이 교육부로부터 제출받은 읽기학습 특성 검사 결과에 따르면 도내 초등학생 587명이 읽기가 곤란하거나 난독증이 의심되는 것으로 나타났습니다.

이 같은 규모는 전체 학생의 1.52%를 차지합니다.

지역별로는 강원이 1.59%로 가장 많았고 이어 충북, 제주 순으로 조사됐습니다.
