New legislation would restrict casino expansion
Lawmakers introduce amendment that gives governor right to deny expansions

Some local lawmakers have introduced legislation that would limit the expansion of casino facilities on the island.

This comes as some casino operators, like those for the Jeju Shinhwa World facility, attempt to enlarge their businesses.

Provincial council members (김동욱) Kim Dong-wook and (이상봉) Lee Sang-bong introduced the amendment.

It would give the governor the power to consider the suitability of any casino that planned to at least double its size. Before he gave the go-ahead for any expansion, he would have to take into consideration the council’s stance on the matter. The governor would also have the right to deny permission for such a move.

The proposed amendment also includes new licensing requirements for casinos that include the hiring of local employees and the submission of regional development plans.

제주도의회 김동욱, 이상봉 의원은 이 같은 내용을 골자로 하는 카지노업 관리와 감독에 관한 조례 개정안을
입법예고했습니다.

개정안은 변경하려는 카지노 영업장이 기존 면적 2배를 초과할 경우 도지사가 적합성을 고려하고 변경허가를 제한할 수 있다고 명시했습니다.

또한 변경허가 전에 도의회 의견을 청취하도록 명문화하고 카지노 신규허가 요건에 지역 고용과 지역발전 상생계획을 포함시켰습니다.
