Fewer new car registrations in Jeju City
Midsize vehicles now included in parking proof requirement

Far fewer new cars are being sold in Jeju City now that a driving proof requirement for drivers has expanded to include midsize vehicles.

According to city officials, about 5,200 new sedans had been registered through the end of September. That’s 27 percent fewer than during the first nine months of 2016.

The total number of vehicle registrations dropped 10 percent to 12,500.

Municipal officials say the province should introduce the parking proof requirement island-wide sooner than planned to amplify its benefits.

차고지증명제가 중형차로 확대되면서 신규 자동차 등록대수가 꾸준히 감소하고 있습니다.

제주시에 따르면 올들어 지난달까지 등록된 자가용 중형차는 5천200여 대로
지난해 같은 기간보다 늘어난 자동차 대수보다 27% 감소했습니다.

특히 같은 기간 신규 등록된 전체 자가용 자동차 대수도 10% 감소한 1만 2천 500여 대로 집계됐습니다.

제주시는 차고지 증명제 효과가 가시적으로 나타나기 위해서는 도 전역에 대한 조기 시행이 필요하다고 설명했습니다.
