Spike in number of pigs, chickens being raised in Jeju
95% more pigs compared to 20 years ago

Jeju farmers are raising vastly more pigs and chickens than they were two decades ago.

The Honam Regional Statistics Office says that, based on a recent study, it determined that the island is home to 572,000 pigs ? 95 percent more than 20 years ago.

Due to rising demand and prices, the number of chickens increased 46 percent over the same period.

Farmers are raising 16 percent fewer cattle, though. Analysts say that’s because beef imports are easier to get here.

제주 돼지·닭 사육두수 대폭 증가

지난 20년 동안 제주지역의 돼지와 닭 사육두수가 대폭 증가했습니다.

호남지방통계청이 도내 가축사육두수를 조사한 결과 돼지는 57만 2천 마리로 20년 전보다 95% 증가했습니다.

닭 역시 소비 증가와 산지가격 상승 등으로 사육두수가 46% 늘었습니다.

반면 도내 한·육우 사육두수는 수입자유화 영향으로 지난 20년 사이 16% 감소했습니다.
