New committee to boost local autonomy
National committee to have 34 members

A new national-level organization will work toward giving Jeju more authority to handle local issues.

The presidential committees for regional autonomy and local development will begin next month running a special committee for decentralization and balanced development as an affiliate organization.

The board will comprise 34 members, including National Assembly members and representatives from industry, academia, and civic groups. It will have two departments ? one for Jeju and one for Sejong City.

The committee members will analyze the successes and the remaining challenges of the specialized decentralization model used in the two areas. They will also work to further enhance regional autonomy.

The committee will draw draw financial support from the national government to boost regional development. The money will be spent on forming industrial clusters, revigorating cities, and giving financial more authority to local governments.

자치발전위-지역발전위 산하 '제주특별위' 설치

제주특별자치도의 지방분권 모델을 완성하기 위한 정부차원의 기구가 설치됩니다.

대통령 직속의 지방자치발전위원회와 지역발전위원회는 다음달부터 산하기구로 세종-제주 자치분권. 균형발전 특별위원회를 구성해 운영하기로 했습니다.

특별위원회는 국회의원과 산학연 대표, 시민단체, 자치분권. 균형발전 전문가 34명으로 구성되며, 위원회 내에 세종 분과와 제주 분과를 운영하게 됩니다.

그동안 특화 모델에 대한 성과와 문제점을 분석하고 과감한 자치분권 확대와 특성화된 지역 발전을 위한 개선과 지원 업무를 맡게 됩니다.

특히 재정분권과 국가사무 이양, 산업 클러스터, 도시재생 등 지역발전에 관한 사항을 논의해 중앙부처의 적극적인 지원을 이끌어낸다는 계획입니다.
