One of Jeju’s stated goals is to become a so-called “Global Environmental Capital” by the year 2020. An island representative at the National Assembly has proposed a revision to the Jeju Special Law to support the initiative. Joseph Kim reports.

The value of the island’s nature has been recognized globally.
Domestically, Jeju has been a model province for fighting against climate change, while promoting environmental education, the smart grid project and the carbon free island project.

Jeju aiming to become ‘Global Environmental Capital’ in 2020
The province has strived to create plans to be recognized as a global environmental capital in 2020 for the first time in the world by the IUCN, an international environmental organization.
However, it hasn’t had good results.

No legal framework to support vision
Because there is no legal basis to earn national funding to support the project.
Absence of public relations is leading to a poor understanding of the project.
And some worry about the administration’s unilateral move without residents’ support.

Although it is somewhat late, some legislators are attempting to seek enactment of the Global Environmental Capital recognition support.

The revision requires the province to draw up basic plans to build the Global Environmental Capital and Seoul to support the plans with finance and administration.
