Forecasters predict less severe winter this year

Forecaster say this winter will be less severe than last winter.

The Jeju Regional Meteorological Administration forecasts average temperatures in December, but higher than normal mercury in January and February.

They say cold spells are possible due to continental high pressure systems. They don’t, however, project lengthy spells of unseasonably cold weather or a lot of snow, like we got in January this year.

12 centimeters of snow fell in Jeju on January 23rd this year - the third highest daily snowfall on record. Around the same time, authorities also issued their first cold wave watch for the island in seven years.

"올 겨울 폭설·한파 가능성 적어"

올 겨울 제주는 지난해와 같은 폭설과 한파가 찾아올 가능성이 적은 것으로 전망됐습니다.

제주지방기상청은 다음달 제주의 기온은 평년과 비슷하겠고 1월과 2월에는 평년보다 다소 높을 것으로 전망했습니다.

특히 찬 대륙고기압이 확장하면서 기온이 큰 폭으로 떨어질 때가 있겠지만 지난해 1월과 같은 폭설 대란과 한파가 찾아올 가능성은 적다고 예측했습니다.

지난해 1월 23일 제주에는 최대 12cm의 눈이 쌓여 적설량 3위 기록을 경신했고 7년 만에 한파주의보가 발효되기도 했습니다.
