Some call (다랑쉬) Darangshi the “queen” of Jeju oreum. Its unique beauty captured the heart of photographer (서재철) Seo Jae-cheol, and his images of the oreum are now on display. Kim Minhoe reports.

Just like the many aspects of our own lives, so too does Darangshi present us with a multitude of appearances.

You can see them now at the exhibition “Oh, Darangshi”, being held at the Nature Love Gallery.

The way the oreum holds the sunlight in its ridges fascinated photographer (서재철) Seo Jae-choel.

Darangshi has a well-balanced appearance. Hikers are amazed by the steep ridge and surprised at the crater on top. Darangshi has beauty unmatched by any other oreum on Jeju.

"다랑쉬오름의 균제미는 아주 뛰어납니다. 오름의 가파른 능선을 올라가면 분화구를 보면서 다시 한 번 놀라게 되죠. 다른 오름에서 느껴볼 수 없는 독특함이 다랑쉬에 있습니다."

The day he first encountered the oreum was imprinted in his mind like a first love. A love that has now existed for 40 years.

30 of the artist’s best photos were carefully chosen for the exhibition: from the old Darangshi with its smooth ridgelines, to the elegant Darangshi seen at dawn and dusk.

The photographer had to wait hours and hours to get the perfect shot.

Photos of excavations from April 3rd Incident

A dark chapter in the island’s history has also been included in Seo’s exhibit.

43 bodies from the April 3rd Incident were discovered in 1992 at Darangshi Cave.

The sad faces of the bereaved families are seen anew.

Seo’s “Oh, Darangshi!” exhibition features both the beautiful and tragic aspects of this Jeju landmark.
