1. In-depth study of broad-leaf bamboo
World Natural Heritage department spending ₩400m on research
Researchers are expanding their study of broad-leaf bamboo to determine how best to manage the plant, which, in some areas at least, appears to be taking over the island.
The provincial department of World Natural Heritage has set aside four hundred million won for the study, which will be at an elevation of 14-hundred meters along the northern slope of Hallasan Mountain. Researchers will focus on a 160-square-kilometer area to determine the spread of the species and what effect it’s having on the ecosystem.
Nanji Livestock Research Institute is letting the department use nine horses as part of the study. They will be left around Manse Hill for three months to see if they can control the broad-leaf bamboo there.
