Committee opposing 2nd airport says issue should be decided at ballot box
Governor Won Hee-ryong was attacked by a protester Monday during a public debate about the construction of a second airport on the island, and the committee opposed to that project has expressed regret for the assault.
The assailant pelted Won, who is seeking re-election in June, with an egg and slapped him in the face.
The committee said all forms of violence run counter to local autonomy and democracy, and that the gubernatorial election should be decided by votes and votes alone.
Committee representatives said the attacker should be held responsible for his actions based on laws and principles but that the provincial government and the transport ministry should take the strong feelings that prompted the attack seriously.
