The province has finalized plans for how to gauge public opinion about the nation’s first for-profit foreign hospital. Here’s Mike Balfour with the details.
The Won Heeryong administration has failed to reach an agreement on the island’s first foreign-invested, for-profit hospital.
The province is asking for residents’ opinions about introducing the controversial hospital.
The public opinion poll committee has been formed and the plan for the poll has been fixed.
The province will select an opinion research company in May and hold two open forums.
The first opinion poll will be carried out in early July. The research company will ask 3,000 area residents about their opinion: pros or cons about the foreign-invested, for-profit hospital.
In July, a group consisting of 200 residents will be formed. The 200 will be selected proportionally based on their age, region, gender and opinion.
The group’s discussion results will be submitted to the public opinion poll committee.
The committee will consider the discussion results and finally submit its recommendations to the governor.
The final recommendations are expected to be submitted by early August.

Initial opinions sharply divided
People who oppose say that the approval of the Greenland International Hospital could be a signal gun for privatization of medical service. Meanwhile, people in favor of the hospital insist that the infrastructure for the hospital has already been established, so the approval shouldn’t be delayed further.
