1. Cultural Heritage Administration makes Suak Station a ‘historic site’
‘Important, unique, and well-preserved’ site related to April 3rd Incident

The Cultural Heritage Administration has made its first designation of an April 3rd Incident location as a historic site.

Suak Station is now the country’s Historic Site number 716.

The administration says Suak Station is important because it sheds light on the incident and the lessons we must learn from it. It was a meeting place and arms depot for Jeju Islanders who were fighting against armed groups that were sent here from the mainland.

It is on (이승이) Iseungi Oreum in Namwon-eup. Compared to similar sites, researchers say that Suak Station is large, that it has unique architectural aspects, and that it is well-preserved.

4.3수악주둔소가 제주4.3유적지 가운데 처음으로 문화재청 지정 공식 문화재로 등록됐습니다.

문화재청은 제주 4.3사건을 재조명하고 교훈을 얻기 위한 역사적 현장으로서 상징적 의미가 있다며 수악주둔소를 등록문화재 제716호로 지정했다고 밝혔습니다.

남원읍 이승이오름에 위치한 수악주둔소는 무장대 토벌을 위해 지어졌던 주둔소 가운데서도 규모가 크고 건축적인 면에서 형식이나 구조가 독특할 뿐 아니라 보존 상태도 양호하다는 평가를 받고 있습니다.
