3. Jeju seeks to host inter-Korean talks
Acting governor says ‘Island of World Peace’ is perfect location for dialogue

The provincial government has proposed that the island host high-level talks between the two Koreas.

Acting governor Jeon Seong-tae sent an official letter outlining the proposal to the Ministry of Unification. He argued that Jeju has already been working on bringing the two countries together through its so-called “Vitamin C Diplomacy,” by shipping Jeju-grown mandarin oranges and carrots to North Korea between 1999 and 2010. And he said the Jeju was the ideal location for high-level inter-Korean dialogue that could lead to reconciliation and lasting peace on the peninsula because of its designation as an “Island of World Peace.”

In the year 2000, Jeju hosted the first Inter-Korean Defense Ministers’ Meeting and the third Inter-Korean Ministerial Meeting, and then it hosted the 17th Inter-Korean Ministerial Meeting in 2005.


남북고위급회담 제주 개최 건의

제주특별자치도가 남북고위급회담을 제주에서 개최할 수 있도록 통일부에 서한문을 보냈습니다.

전성태 도지사 권한대행 명의로 보낸 서한문에서 제주는 지난 1999년부터 2010년까지 비타민 C 외교로 불리는 감귤과 당근 북한 보내기 운동으로 남북간 거리를 좁혀왔다며 세계평화의 섬인 만큼 한반도의 항구적 평화와 화해의 시대를 여는 남북고위급 회담의 최적지가 될 수 있다고 강조했습니다.

제주에서는 지난 2000년 제1차 남북 국방장관 회담과 제3차 남북장관급 회담,
2005년 제17차 남북장관급 회담이 열린 바 있습니다.
