5. Researchers to study effect of ‘seeding’ local waters with marine life
Scientists focusing on abalones, red sea cucumbers
Scientists regularly “seed” local waters with marine life to ensure populations of various species stay healthy, and researchers are going to study the effects of such releases.
The Jeju Maritime Research Institute will attach metallic markers to 40,000 young abalones which will be discharged from area fishing villages. Researchers say that will help them figure out how many of them survive in the wild.
They will also study the growth, development, and migration routes of different varieties of abalones that are released.
Finally, researchers will perform a genetic analysis to determine the effects of the releases on one of Jeju’s marine specialties: the red sea cucumber.
