This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker takes a brief look at Gimnyeong Beach. This well-known spot along the northeast coast of Jeju has a pristine feel to it thanks to fewer tourist-related developments in the area.
Jeju’s beaches are generally immune to the overcrowded summers we see at times on the mainland. During the peak summer season, for example, visitor numbers for Haeundae Beach in Busan City can hit 1 million in a day!

Gimnyeong-ri, Gujwa-eup, Jeju City
One well-known but idyllically pristine case in point is Gimnyeong Beach. This summer destination, located east of Jeju City, is relatively small, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in beauty and convenience.
For one, it’s easy to get to by intercity bus or car. A newly renovated section of the Iljudong-ro highway has reduced traffic and travel times significantly.

Popular with swimmers, divers, yachters
Once there, Gimnyeong Beach is obviously special. Except for the most overcast of days, the water and sand radiate a beautiful turquoise and white color. It is popular with scuba divers and majestic sailing vessels pass by on their way to the nearby yacht club.
During the summer months, there are on-duty lifeguards, as well as facilities like change rooms, showers, and a convenience store.

Olle Trail 20, Jeju Geo Trail
Gimnyeong Beach is located along Jeju Olle walking trail No. 20. A Jeju Geo Trail also extends for 15 kilometers along the coast, offering trekkers with information on the geology and fishing and folk culture of the area.

All in all, except for perhaps the busiest days of the summer season, Gimnyeong is the perfect Jeju beach you can call all your own.
