1. ‘Full assessment of refugee issue’ ordered
President responds to growing unease about Yemeni asylum seekers in Jeju

With growing unease across the country about the hundreds of Yemeni refugees in Jeju seeking asylum, President Moon Jae-in has ordered officials to assess the situation.

Blue House press secretary (김의겸) Kim Eui-kyeom said Wednesday during a regular briefing that the president had called for a full assessment of the situation in Jeju.

Kim said that the Moon administration had on June first added Yemen to a list of 11 countries whose citizens must have visas to enter Jeju. Yemenis had previously been included in the island’s visa-waiver program.

Over 480 people from the war-torn country are now in Jeju.

난민수용 문제와 관련해 현황파악을 지시했다고 밝혔습니다.

그러면서 제주도에 비자없이 들어올 수 있는 나라가 있고, 없는 나라가 있다며
무사증 입국불허국가 11개국에 지난 1일부터 예멘을 추가한 상태로 더 이상 이들이 들어올 수 없는 상황이라고 말했습니다.

현재 제주에 체류하고 있는 예멘인은 480여명에 이르고 있습니다.
