1. Expedited screening of Yemeni asylum applications
Justice ministry aims to have initial screenings complete by end of August

The national government will expedite the screening of asylum applications that have been submitted by hundreds of Yemenis in Jeju.

The Ministry of Justice has assigned more workers to their cases, with a goal of completing the first round of screening by the end of August.

Specifically, the Jeju branch of the Korea Immigration Service has assigned one more examiner to their cases, and it plans to dispatch two Arabic interpreters to the island in the coming days.

561 Yemenis arrived in Jeju when they were still allowed to enter the province without a visa. 549 are petitioning for asylum.

정부가 제주지역 예멘 난민 신청자에 대한 심사를 우선 진행하기로 했습니다.

법무부는 인력을 추가로 투입해 예멘인 난민 신청자를 집중적으로 심사해 1차 심사를 이르면 8개월에 마무리하기로 했습니다

이를 위해 제주 출입국 외국인청에 1명 뿐인 난민 심사관을 추가로 배치하는 한편 다음 주부터는 아랍어 통역 직원 2명도 배치할 계획입니다

현재 제주에 무사증으로 입국한 예멘인 561명 가운데 난민 신청자는 549명 입니다.
