Increasing number of subtropical species in local waters

The waters around Jeju are becoming subtropical.

The National Fisheries Research & Development Institute says that since it began studying the issue in 2014, a type of stony coral that functions as an indicator species for subtropical seas has been growing by more than four centimeters annually.

Another denizen of warmer waters, the blue-striped angelfish, is appearing more frequently in coastal waters. In fact, 40 percent of all species in Jeju waters are found in subtropical regions.

The fisheries research institute says it will monitor the impact of the warmer-water species on the local marine environment.



제주바다 아열대화…그물코돌산호 정착

제주바다가 점차 아열대로 변하고 있습니다.

해양수산부 국립수산과학원이 지난 2014년부터 제주연안을 조사한 결과 아열대 지표종으로 불리는 그물코돌산호가 해마다 4cm 이상씩 성장하며 정착한 것으로 관측됐다고 밝혔습니다.

특히 조사 기간 제주 연안에서 출현한 청줄돔 등 아열대성 어종도 전체 어획물의 40%이상에 달하는 것으로 조사됐습니다.

이에 따라 국립수산과학원은 아열대 해양생물들이 제주바다에 미치는 영향을 모니터링하기로 했습니다.
