1. Seoul speeds up screening of Yemeni asylum petitions
Additional interpreters begin work Monday

More people are now working on the asylum petitions from the hundreds of Yemeni refugees on the island.

The national government recently convened a meeting with representatives from the Ministry of Justice, administrative offices, and the provincial government to discuss the issue.

Four people, including two interpreters, had been screening the asylum applications. At the meeting, the officials decided to add two more interpreters to the team, and they began work Monday.

This is expected to cut the normally eight-month screening process per petition by two to three months.

The justice ministry says it will also revise the Refugee Act to prevent abuse of it and to ensure that those who truly need the aid are granted it.

정부, 예멘 난민 대책 발표…심사 인력 확대

예멘 난민심사 인력이 확대됩니다.

정부는 법무부를 중심으로 중앙 행정기관, 제주도와 함께 예멘 난민 문제와 관련한 회의를 개최해 이같이 결정했습니다.

지금까지 통역 2명을 포함해 4명이 난민심사를 담당해왔지만 7월 2일부터 통역 2명을 추가 투입이 되었습니다.

이에따라 난민 신청자들을 대상으로 한 심사기간은 기존 8개월에서 2 ~ 3개월 앞당겨질 것으로 예상됩니다.

법무부는 이와함께 난민제도를 악용하는 사례를 방지하기 위해 난민법 개정을 추진하고 보호가 필요한 난민은 신속하게 대처하기로 했습니다.
