2. Growing number of local students come from ‘multicultural families’
Nealy 1,800 have one non-Korean parent

Every year, there are more students at the island’s schools with one non-Korean parent.

The provincial education office says the number of students from so-called “multicultural families” has more than tripled over the past five years. The tally went from 564 in 2013, to 1,190 in 2016, to 1,509 in 2017, to 1,760 this April.

1,455 are now elementary students, 194 are in middle school, and the remaining 73 are in high school.

The education office will hold a forum this year to discuss and improve initiatives for multicultural students.

제주도내 다문화가정 학생 수가 크게 늘고 있습니다.

제주도교육청에 따르면 지난 2013년 564명이었던 제주 다문화가정 학생 수는 2016년 1천190명, 지난해 1천509명, 지난 4월까지 1천760으로 집계되는 등
불과 5년사이 3배 이상 급증했습니다.

학급별로는 초등학생이 1천455명, 중학생 194명, 고등학생 73명 순입니다.

제주도교육청은 올 하반기 제주 다문화교육포럼을 열어 다문화 교육사업에 대한 평가와 발전방안을 모색해 나갈 계획입니다.
