Attendees at the recent Jeju Forum discussed North Korean denuclearization and peace on the Korean Peninsula. In the opening ceremony, Governor Won Hee-ryong suggested a North Korea/US summit in Jeju. Mike Balfour reports.

‘Please join peace process on Korean Peninsula’

Prime Minister, (이낙연) Lee Nak-yon who led the Korean delegation, appealed to international delegates to join the peace process happening on the Korean Peninsula.

In his opening speech, Governor Won Hee-ryong wished that the world's last divided country be the starting place for world peace.

Won proposes NK-US summit in Jeju

He also proposed holding a follow-up North Korea-US summit in Jeju, as the island in the past had been a hosting venue for summit meetings.

On the second day of the forum under the theme of "Reengineering for Peace for Asia", denuclearization of North Korea was the most discussed issue.

‘Military drills and sanctions should remain until denuclearization’

Ban Ki-moon, the former Secretary-General of the United Nations, says that the denuclearization of North Korea and the South Korea-US alliance are totally separate issues, therefore the South Korea-US joint military drills and the sanctions against North Korea shouldn't be suspended until the verifiable denuclearization of North Korea.
