Local politicians, national lawmakers call it a win for autonomy

A lot of officials and politicians are welcoming the national government’s decision to designate a local holiday to commemorate the victims of the April 3rd Incident.

One of Jeju’s representatives at the National Assembly, Kang Chang-il, from the Democratic Party, released a press release that hailed the decision as the foundation for the complete resolution of issues related to the April 3rd Incident. He also said the occasion was even more meaningful because the holiday was the result of decentralization and autonomy.

Provincial council members, including chair Kim Tae-seok, welcomed the decision by pointing out that the designation of the day was the direct result of local wishes and work. They also said they believed it can be used as a strong basis to resolve issues related to the April 3rd Incident.

김태석 의장을 비롯한 제주도의회 의원 일동도 도의회에서 제정한 지방공휴일 지정 조례안 내용이 국무회의에서 의결된 것은 지방 스스로 필요한 결정을 내렸다는 점에서 의의가 크다며 4.3 해결의 초석이 되기를 기대한다고 밝혔습니다.
