3. Geological study of Sara Oreum crater lake
Scientists to take core samples from 5 locations

The provincial government will soon begin a geological study of the crater lake atop Sara Oreum.

The Korea Institute of Geoscience & Mineral Resources will drill five holes in Sanjeong Lake, each to a depth of five or ten meters.

Researchers will then analyze the core samples it extracts from those holes to determine their age and the climatic conditions during the different eras of the island.

This is the third time scientists have taken core samples from the mountain. They began in Baengnokdam in 2016, and then they drilled in the Muljangori crater lake last year.

제주특별자치도가 산정호수인 사라오름 분화구를 시추조사합니다.

이번 조사를 맡은 한국지질자원연구원은 사라오름 분화구 5개 지점에 5미터와 10미터 깊이로 시추해 퇴적층을 수거합니다.

이를 통해 연대측정과 기후 등을 분석할 예정입니다.

한라산 시추조사는 지난 2016년 백록담과 지난해 물장오리에 이어 이번이 세번째 입니다.
