Seoul to respond to record number of signatures

In response to the hundreds of Yemeni asylum seekers in Jeju, a record number of Korean citizens have signed a public petition asking the national government to turn away refugees.

The petition began June 13th, and some 681,000 people had signed it as of Tuesday. That’s more than the previous record, which was to voice opposition to the release from prison of convicted murderer (조두순) Jo Du-soon.

Petitioners say that in the name of safety and public order the government must revise or repeal its asylum law.

Amid the public uproar, all eyes are now on the response to the petition from the presidential Blue House.
