Broadleaf bamboo has taken over parts of the island in recent years, but local authorities may have found a new way to control its spread: horses.

The Jeju World Natural Heritage Management Division says each horse that it has used to control the bamboo has eaten an average of 8.7 kilograms of it per day. In those areas, the number of plant species has increased from 36 to 44, meaning the bamboo is no longer dominating the ecosystem.

Researchers say the animals have been so effective that it will use more of them. The division received eight Halla horses from the National Institute of Animal Science on Friday and pastured them around Mansae Hill.

It will also attack the problem more directly by cutting out the broadleaf bamboo in four areas, including Seonjakjiwat and Jindalaebat.

제주도세계유산본부가 이같은 사업을 계속 추진합니다.

이를 위해 국립축산과학원으로부터 한라마 8마리를 지원받아 13일 한라산 만세동산 일대에 방목하기로 했습니다.

지난 2년 동안 말 방목 효과를 보면 말 한마리가 하루에 조릿대를 8.7kg 정도 먹었고 방목지 내 식물다양성은 36종에서 44종으로 늘었습니다.

세계유산본부는 말 방목과 함께 선작지왓과 진달래밭 등 4군데에서 조릿대를 베어내는 제거작업을 병행할 계획입니다
