Senior Secretary of Civil Affairs makes visit to Jeju

The Senior Secretary for Civil Affairs has asked for Jeju’s understanding on any inadequate steps taken for the planned international fleet review at the Gangjeong Naval Base.

Senior Secretary (이용선)Lee Yong-sun visited Jeju Wednesday and met with Governor Won Hee-ryong and Provincial Council Chairman (김태석)Kim Taeseok. During the meeting (이)Lee explained that the fleet review was being planned, in line with efforts to resolve conflict with Gangjeong residents, adding that it was unfortunate this intention had not fully been delivered.

He also stressed that it was not in the interest of the central government or the Navy to escalate tension in the area.

The official underscored the need to see the fleet review as an international event, and said the government would collect public opinion by locals before reaching a conclusion.



이용선 수석 "관함식, 지역 의견수렴"

이용선 청와대 시민사회수석이 해군이 추진 중인 국제관함식 개최와 관련해
일부 절차가 부적절하게 진행된 점이 있다며 양해를 구했습니다.

제주를 찾은 이 수석은 18일 원희룡 지사와 도의회 김태석 의장을 만나
강정마을 갈등 치유에 도움이 되는 방향으로 관함식 추진 계획을 잡았지만,
마을과 충분히 공유되지 못한 것 같아 아쉽다고 말했습니다.

아울러 정부나 해군도 마을 갈등이 확산되는 것을 원하지 않는다고 밝혔습니다.

관함식은 국제행사로 이제 결론을 내려서 실행해야 할 단계라며 강정마을 등 지역사회
의견을 충분히 수렴해 결론을 내리겠다고 강조했습니다.
