Navy base opponents release statement Thursday

A local group is coming down hard on the national government for its stance on a planned naval review at the Gangjeong naval base.

The committee opposes the base and supports the development of Jeju into an island of peace. In a July 19th statement it criticized the presidential Blue House for ordering the Gangjeong village council to hold another meeting on the planned naval review.

The committee says that instead of trying to cajole the village into hosting the event, the national government should order the navy not to hold it.

제주군사기지 저지와 평화의섬 실현을 위한 범도민 대책위원회는 19일 성명을 내고 관함식 개최와 관련해 강정마을 총회를 다시 열도록 강요한 청와대의 행태를 지적했습니다.

대책위는 청와대가 할 일은 강정마을을 회유하는 것이 아니라 해군에 관함식 개최 중단을 지시하는 것이라고 주장했습니다.
