Fewer foreign nationals buying local property in order to gain Jeju residency

Foreign nationals are losing interest in the province’s real estate investment immigration system.

According to the provincial government, 158 people bought qualifying property in Jeju to become official residents of the island when the system was introduced in 2010. That number fell to 121 in 2012, before skyrocketing to 667 in 2013. It has since been falling: to 220 in 2016, and then to just 37 last year.

Analysts say the downward trend may be the result of new policies designed to suppress real estate investment and limit the areas in which qualifying purchases may be made.

The provincial government says it plans to develop the real estate investment immigration system in a desirable direction.

부동산 투자 이민제에 대한 관심이 갈수록 떨어지고 있습니다.

제주특별자치도에 따르면 지난 2010년 도입된 부동산 투자 이민제는 첫해 158건을 시작으로 2012년 121건, 2013년 667건으로 정점을 찍었으나 이후 내리막길을 걸으면서 2016년 220건, 지난해 37건에 머물렀습니다.

각종 투자 억제정책과 투자이민제 대상지 제한에 따른 것으로 보입니다.

제주도는 앞으로 바람직한 부동산투자이민제 운영방향을 마련한다는 계획입니다.
