3. ‘Jeju construction sector will likely contract this year’
BOK representatives say industry may shrink by 3%

The Jeju construction sector grew by over ten percent last year, but analysts say it will contract this year.

The Jeju branch of the Bank of Korea says the industry will shrink by three percent this year, because of fewer work contracts being signed and a temporary suspension to some large developments.

The deterioration in the sector is beginning to be reflected in economic sentiment on the island, and that’s leading analysts to warn of another year in the red in 2019.

Bank representatives say local contractors should look to other, less competitive regions of the country for work. They also say the firms need to focus on restructuring in the mid- to long-term.

"제주 건설업 마이너스 성장 예상"

지난해 10% 이상의 성장률을 기록했던 제주지역 건설업이 올해 마이너스 성장을 기록할 전망입니다.

한국은행 제주본부는 올해 신규물량이 감소하고 대규모 공사가 일시 중단됨에 따라
제주 건설업 성장률이 -3% 내외로 하락하겠다고 분석했습니다.

특히 그동안 악화돼 온 제주지역 각종 건설지표가 실제 체감경기에 본격적으로 반영되기 시작하는 시점이라며 내년에도 마이너스 성장률을 이어갈 가능성이 높다고 덧붙였습니다.

과당경쟁이 심각한 도내 건설시장을 도외지역으로 확대하고 중장기적으로는 구조조정이 필요하다고 설명했습니다.
