1. Livestock languishing in the heat
1,100 animals died over last month, hens laying fewer eggs

The ongoing heat wave, with temperatures north of 30 degrees, is wreaking havoc at local livestock farms.

The provincial government says 350 chickens at a Gujwa-eup farm died last month. That was followed by the deaths of some 470 hogs. Officials say that over the past month, 11-hundred farm animals have perished in the heat.

Other problems include livestock eating less in the hot weather and then losing weight, as well as a drop in egg production.

The province says farmers should install shades to keep the sun off their animals and/or spray water around their facilities to keep temperatures down. Authorities are also asking farmers to immediately report any suspected problems with their animals.

폭염에 가축 폐사·산란율 저하 잇따라

30도가 넘는 무더위가 계속되면서 가축 사육농가 집단 폐사나 산란율 저하 등 피해가 확산되고 있습니다.

제주특별자치도에 따르면 지난달 구좌읍 양계 농가에서 닭 350마리가 집단 폐사한데 이어 돼지 470마리 등 최근 한 달여 간 가축 1천 1백여 마리가 폐사했습니다.

폭염이 이어지면서 사료 섭취량이 줄고 체중 감소와 산란율 저하 등으로 폐사 피해가 발생하고 있습니다.

제주도는 차광막을 설치하거나 수시로 물을 뿌려 사육장 온도를 내리도록 하고 의심 증세가 있으면 즉시 신고해달라고 당부했습니다.
