Proposal would free up compensation for heat wave damage

A local lawmaker wants heat waves like the one we’re experiencing to be considered natural disasters.

Provincial council member Gang Seong-min on Tuesday gave advance notice of a revision to the island’s natural disaster ordinance. The changes specify the definition of a disaster and adds heat waves to the list of what can be considered natural disasters.

Mr. Gang says it is difficult for people to seek compensation for heat wave damage, even though it can be substantial, so the revision includes a stipulation that disaster relief funding may included in the government’s heat wave response.

제주도의회 강성민 의원은 재난의 정의를 조례에 명시하고 폭염을 자연재난에 포함하는 내용의 제주도 재난 안전관리 조례 개정안을 7일 입법예고했습니다.

강 의원은 폭염 피해는 심각하지만 다른 자연재난과 달리 피해 보상을 받기 쉽지 않다며 이번 조례 개정을 통해 폭염 대비 사업에 재난관리기금을 지원하는 내용을 포함했다고 밝혔습니다.
