This week on Jeju: A to Z, Todd Thacker walks us through the illuminating work of international artists who have open-air installations and sculptures on display at the Jeju Light Art Festa.
One thing you’ll notice on Jeju as you look up into a clear night sky is how bright the stars shine out in Korea’s South Sea. Now you can also look down to experience a similar feeling of celestial wonder, albeit a terrestrial one.

The Jeju Light Art Festa gives visitors a chance to explore an entirely luminous aesthetic in a number of open-air and subterranean exhibitions. The location this year is a seven-hectare site at a green tea field and the Daheeyeon cave cafe in Jocheon-eup, east of Jeju City.

14 works by 6 artists are on display through Oct. 24
The first of its kind in Asia, organizers of the festival have brought together 14 creations by six internationally renowned artists to inspire you with their light installations and sculptures through October 24th.
British artist Bruce Munro, for example, studied Jeju’s volcanic geology and geography to create a large-scale, immersive outdoor installation that embraces the island’s sensory wonders.

In addition to the festival’s light art exhibition, visitors can also enjoy a cup of locally-grown green tea, or grab a bite to eat at one of the food carts or food trucks on site. For times, fees, and a list of the artists and their work, consult the festival’s website at jejulaf.com/en.

A quick word on photography at the festival: While the organizers of the Jeju Light Art Festa warmly encourage visitors to record as many beautiful memories as they wish, they caution that commercial use of those images is prohibited.
