1. Typhoon Soulik pounds Jeju
1 person missing, blackouts, transportation mayhem

This season’s 19th major storm left a trail of destruction in Jeju as it battered the island on its way up toward the western coast of the Korean Peninsula.

Typhoon Soulik packed extremely high winds and pounding sheets of rain. Representatives of the Jeju Disaster Prevention and Countermeasures Headquarters say the high surf swept a woman away around 7 p.m. Wednesday. The female tourist in her 20s, who is listed as missing, got pulled out to sea around (소정방) Sojeongbang Falls while she was taking pictures.

The waves were so strong that they washed away some of the supports to the Wimi Port breakwater. The storm also cut power to thousands of homes.

Flights and ferries connecting with Jeju have been suspended for two days due to the storm, stranding some 10,000 travelers on the island.

태풍 '솔릭' 제주 통과... 피해 속출

제19호 태풍 '솔릭'이 제주를 통과한 후 서해안을 따라 북상중인 가운데 피해가 속출했습니다.

제주도재난안전대책본부에 따르면 강한 바람과 폭우가 동반하면서 22일 오후 7시쯤 소정방폭포에서 사진을 찍던 20대 여성 관광객이 파도에 휩쓸려 실종됐습다.

또 위미항 방파제 보강시설물이 높은 파도에 유실되고 수천 가구가 정전 피해를 입었습니다.

제주를 오가는 항공편과 여객선도 이틀째 운항이 중단돼 관광객 1만여명이 한때 발이 묶이기도 했습니다.
