5. ‘Boksooni’ gives birth
Dolphin freed from captivity, released back into wild 3 years ago

One of the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins that was rescued from a mainland dolphin show and released back into its home waters off Jeju three years ago has given birth.

A research team with members from Jeju National University, Ewha Womans University, and Kyoto University analyzed photos taken in coastal waters and determined that, although (복순이) “Boksooni” had been swimming alone, beginning August 7th, she was swimming with a baby dolphin.

This is the third dolphin that was released back into the wild to give birth. The other two are (삼팔이) “Sampari” and (춘삼이) “Choonsami,” which were released in 2016.


남방돌고래 '복순이' 번식 확인

불법포획돼 돌고래쇼 공연에 동원됐다 3년 전 고향 제주 바다에 방사된 남방큰돌고래 복순이가 새끼를 낳은 것으로 확인됐습니다.

제주대와 이화여대·교토대 연구팀은 최근 제주 연안에서 발견된 복순이의 사진을 분석한 결과 지난달까지 홀로 다니던 복순이가 이달 7일부터 새끼 돌고래와 함께 헤엄치는 모습을 확인했다고 밝혔습니다.

바다로 돌려보낸 돌고래들이 야생에서 번식에 성공한 것은 재작년 방사된 삼팔이와 춘삼이에 이어 이번이 세 번째입니다.
