Just 4% apply for new program

Very few rural guesthouses have shown interest in seeking security certification from the provincial government.

The new certification program is part of the province’s crime prevention efforts.

Jeju City received 65 applications for the certification, Seogwipo, 83, for a total of only 148. That’s just four percent of Jeju’s 37-hundred registered rural accommodations.

Officials who have analyzed the lackluster response say it’s too difficult for the businesses to meet the requirements. There are 20 requirements in five categories, which cover things such as basic equipment and facilities, crime prevention, and regulatory compliance. The officials also say the benefits of the certification are inadequate.

편법 운영과 각종 범죄를 예방하기 위해 제주에서는 첫 시행하는 농어촌민박 안전 인증제가 별다른 호응을 얻지 못하고 있습니다.

양 행정시가 지난주까지 농어촌민박 안전 인증제에 따른 접수를 받은 결과 제주시 65군데, 서귀포시 83곳 등 140여군데가 신청했습니다.

제주도내 전체 농어촌민박이 3천 700여군데에 이르는 점을 감안하면 4%에 지니지 않고 있습니다.

이같은 현상은 기본시설이나 범죄예방, 법규준수 등 5개 분야에 20개 항목을 모두 충족해야 하는 까다로운 조건이지만 이렇다할 인센티브나 관심이 없어 호응을 얻지 못한 것으로 분석되고 있습니다.
