Batdam are Jeju’s internationally-recognized traditional stone walls

The Jeju Batdam Festival is September 15th and 16th at the Jeju Batdam Park in Woljeong-ri, Gujwa-eup.

Batdam are the island’s traditional stone walls. Seoul designated them as important national agricultural heritage in 2013, and the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization listed them as Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems in 2014.

This is the fourth edition of the festival. The theme this year is “Telling the Stories of a Thousand Years of Batdam.” Visitors will be able to try building walls themselves, rolling the types of stones used in them, traditional farming techniques, and other activities. There will also be a number of performances.

One of the highlights will be a guided hike along batdam paths to learn about the history of the walls and the characteristics of traditional agriculture. Those who register in advance for one of the five guided hikes will enjoy a traditional Jeju lunchbox, called a (동고량) “donggoryang”.

제4회 제주밭담축제 15~16일 밭담공원서 개최

제주밭담 축제가 오는 15일과 16일 이틀간 제주시 구좌읍 월정리 제주밭담 테마공원에서 열립니다.

제주밭담 축제는 2013년 국가중요농어업유산으로 지정되고, 2014년 FAO 세계중요농업유산으로 등재됨에 따라 제주밭담의 가치를 알리고, 농업 유산의 가치를 공유하기 위해 2015년부터 열리기 시작해 올해 네번째를 맞고 있습니다.

'천년의 밭담, 그 가치를 말하다'를 주제로 제주밭담길 걷기를 비롯해 밭담 쌓기, 굽돌 굴리기, 제주농사와 돗통시 체험 등 다채로운 경연과 체험 프로그램으로 운영됩니다.

특히 축제 기간 동안 모두 다섯차례 운영되는 밭담길 걷기는 전문 해설사들을 통해 밭담의 역사와 농경문화를 직접 듣고 체험하게 되며 사전 신청자에 한하여 제주전통 도시락인 동고량이 제공됩니다.
