‘Little chance virus could survive in processed foods’
China is struggling amid a breakout of African swine fever, and officials say they have found evidence of the virus that causes the disease here in Jeju.
The disease has a fatality rate approaching 100 percent in hogs.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said researchers discovered ASF virus genetic material in sausage that a Chinese traveler was carrying when he or she arrived at Jeju International Airport August 26th.
Authorities say there is little chance that the virus could survive in processed foods like sausages. They will still recheck for any surviving virus through cell culture testing.
African swine fever is a grade one infectious livestock disease in Korea. No vaccine has been developed for it.
